Lately, craft beer has been enjoying a renaissance of sorts, and southern breweries have been leading the charge. One brewery sets the bar in terms of creativity – Lazy Magnolia of Kiln, MS. Lazy Magnolia is Mississippi’s first and only brewery. It has an impressive lineup, but its crown jewel, and my personal favorite, is its Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale. I fell in love with this unique beer while in school at Ole Miss and have been patiently awaiting its arrival here in Georgia since graduation. I was pleased to learn it is now readily available around Atlanta after talking to the friendly sales reps at the Beer Bourbon & BBQ Fest.
According to the brewery, Southern Pecan is the first beer in the world made with whole, roasted pecans. The use of pecans is genius because they act like a grain and provide nuttiness and an insane depth of flavor that you just can’t match in other beers. Southern Pecan has mild, but evident, hops making it a medium-to-full bodied, but still incredibly drinkable, beer. The lighter hops allow the malty, caramel and nutty flavors to shine through. I want to be clear though; this is not a sweet beer. It is similar to classic nut-brown ales, but with exciting new flavors. Balance and subtlety reign supreme in this beer. With every sip you can taste and appreciate each distinct flavor without them overpowering each other.
Lazy Magnolia is a southern brewery that has done everything right. Founded in 2003, they have grown steadily, but without sacrificing quality. They make really good beer with incredibly creative brewing techniques and stellar packaging. I highly recommend Lazy Magnolia’s Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale. While this is not a beer to drink all the time, it is one that I will always have in my fridge. Be careful though, it’s addictive.

I love Lazy Magnolia, haven’t had a bad beer yet from them. I’m pretty sure I’ve sampled everything they’ve put out thus far.
Geez…from the Kiln! Who knew? I just had some of this last week… Really good. That dirty coast rat Brett Farve have anything to do with this?
