The Best Cookies Are From New York

October 31, 2017 By Kevin Ekmark

Food and travel have a funny effect on a man’s soul. It was a trip (and maybe an amazing cookie) to New York over a year ago that solidified my decision that it was time to step down as CEO and pass on the reigns to someone else. It was time to chase a new adventure!

Andrea (my wife) and I turned a work trip to NYC into a family extravaganza that ended up taking me on my first trip to the Hamptons.

While the city lights of New York City and the poshness of the Hamptons can capture your gaze, there was one amazing thing that tied these two cities together. It wasn’t the Hampton Jitney or the Long Island Railroad.

No. None of those things could hold a candle to the religious experience of eating a cookie by Levain Bakery.

When You See a Line Stretch Down the Street, It’s Good

Some places fail to impress due to someone over hyping the experience. I listened to Andrea talk these cookies up since her last trip to New York the summer before. On our last day in the city before we hit the Jitney, we walked to the Upper West Side for the legendary Levain cookies.

As we turned the corner, I saw a line stretching down the street. People were passing by each other, walking in with anticipation, and walking out with patience that had reached its limit.

These people were pretty pumped about some cookies.

All the NYC skyline was missing was a cookie skyscraper. ? by @london.food.girl . . . . #levainbakery #nyc #skyline #nycskyline #centralpark #cookies #chocolatechipcookies #treatyoself #nycbakery

Levain Bakery Cookie Perfection

We couldn’t just eat these cookies on the street. Andrea forced me to walk another block to the Hudson Greenway (where you can enjoy people watching by the Hudson River). Looking back, I’m glad she made me wait. This cookie deserved a moment of silence by the river before I devoured it.

I chose the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip, and she had the Chocolate Chip Walnut cookie.

This was one of those rare moments where the experience matched the hype, the line was worth the wait, and I wasn’t sure if I could physically eat a 2nd cookie because it was so filling.

Your New York experience isn’t complete without a visit (or two) to Levain Bakery.
