DEFIANT, American Single Malt Whisky from North Carolina

January 17, 2018 By Kevin Ekmark

Defiant Single Malt Whisky, North Carolina

Well, this was way different from what I was expecting. But if I'm being honest, I didn't know what I was expecting from my first sip of Defiant American Single Malt Whisky. Produced by Blue Ridge Distilling Co, this spirit pulls from traditions of Scottish whisky and marries it with the New World style of American whiskey. Defiant is a new way of distilling. We’re not bound by barrels or recipes or tradition." Since I live in Denver now, I don't get to taste from the sweet nectar of … [Read more...]

5 Books for Every Whiskey Lover

December 16, 2017 By Kevin Ekmark

The Standard Cocktail Guide by Crosby Gaige

Whiskey and books seem like they might go together like peanut butter and jelly. Both are typically relaxing, can be enjoyed in a nice leather chair, and have been known to unite people from across the world. Cheers to whiskey, books, and your soon to be growing library. My own experience has been that the tools I need for my trade are paper, tobacco, food, and a little whisky.” — William Faulkner Humor and History The Essential Scratch & Sniff Guide to Becoming a Whiskey Know-It-All: … [Read more...]

Rough Rider Double Casked Straight Bourbon Whiskey Review

March 24, 2017 By Kevin Ekmark

Rough Rider Whiskey Review

Welcome to New York I know, I know. New York is nowhere near the South, but let's just use this post to introduce the expansion of The Trot Line. Over the past few months, I've had a few amazing whiskeys from across the States. When my go to W.L. Weller is sold out (Weller crisis?), a bottle from somewhere other than Kentucky or Tennessee can quickly catch my eye and water my tastebuds. This weekend, a bottle of Rough Rider Double Casked Straight Bourbon Whiskey (Batch 11), by Long Island … [Read more...]

Every few months, I like to share my top 5 favorite bourbons that are under $35 (for .750ml). Feel free to leave one or two of your favorite affordable bourbons in the comments below. Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

June 7, 2011 By Spencer

Buffalo Trace Bourbon Whiskey

Buffalo Trace, the 2005-2007 Distiller of the Year, is responsible for some of the finest bourbon in production. Their stable of brands includes (but is not limited to) Blanton’s, George T Stagg, Eagle Rare and the legendary Pappy Van Winkle. In other words, these guys know how to make some bourbon! Buffalo Trace claims to be the oldest (not necessarily continuously-operating) distilling site in the United States. With this heritage in mind, I was excited to try the bottle that carries the … [Read more...]

Three Classic Cocktails to Add to Your Repertoire

May 23, 2011 By Talbot

Old Fashioned Classic Cocktail | The South

Your ability to make or enjoy a cocktail should go beyond the trite gin/vodka and soda/tonic water with a lime.  While refreshing, it is boring and should only be used when your cupboards are bare and you ONLY have the two ingredients.  Fret not, I am going expand your horizons with three different cocktails that are sophisticated enough to order out during a date night, but easy enough to mix up after a long day at the office.  Salut! The Old-Fashioned The first cocktail on the list … [Read more...]

Sippin’ Back on Costco’s Small Batch Bourbon

April 30, 2011 By Kevin Ekmark

Costco Bourbon

Over the past year, Costco has been making noise in the alcohol market.  In Georgia, they are legally allowed to sell liquor, but it is shop separated from the rest of the building.  I can only assume that they have done this to side step the liquor laws in Georgia.  It was a good call!  They have some pretty awesome prices for the spirits, especially if you are looking for a steal when it comes to handles.  When I buy whiskey or vodka, I can usually find the best deal here. You Might Also … [Read more...]
